Public Transport and Deutschlandticket

About 1 minutes to read. Verify current official requirements using the source links in the chapter.

Deutschlandticket

  • €63/month in 2026. Valid on all local and regional transport in Germany: buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, regional trains (RE, RB).
  • Not valid on long-distance ICE, IC, EC trains or Flixtrain/Flixbus.
  • It's a monthly subscription, cancellable until the 10th of the month for the end of that month.
  • Personal and non-transferable. Carry ID — checks happen.
  • Jobticket: if your employer contributes at least 25%, you get an additional 5% discount — ask HR.
  • Students: a cheaper Deutschlandsemesterticket through the university.

Long distance

  • DB Navigator app for tickets. Sparpreis/Super Sparpreis fares are cheap when booked early but tied to a specific train.
  • BahnCard 25/50/100 for frequent travellers. Check whether it renews automatically.
  • Passenger rights: delay at arrival of 60+ min → 25% refund, 120+ min → 50%. Claim in the DB Navigator app. If a delay of 20+ minutes is expected, the train binding on saver fares is lifted.

Rules on board

  • Validate paper tickets where required (blue/orange stampers in many cities).
  • Riding without a valid ticket (Schwarzfahren) costs €60 extra on the spot. Repeat cases can be prosecuted.
  • Bikes: usually need an extra ticket in regional trains (not covered by the Deutschlandticket in most regions).

Cycling

Lights front and rear are mandatory, and you must use bike lanes when marked with a blue sign. Riding on pavements isn't allowed for adults. Phone use while cycling costs a fine. Alcohol limit: 1.6‰, or lower if you ride unsafely.
